Malaysia's NR production fell in May

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Production of natural rubber in May 2012 fell by 3.6 percent year-on-year, to 69,072 tonnes. The figure was up by 12.6 percent (7,746 tonnes) when compared to April 2012.

Year-on-year exports fell by by 22.6 percent to 62,863 tonnes in May 2012. This was lower by 4.4 percent when compared with April 2012. Standard Malaysian Rubber (SMR) constituted 95.9 percent of total exports where SMR 20 accounted the highest, 46.5 percent.

The main destination of NR exports was the People's Rep. of China with 24,801 tonnes (39.5 percent), followed by Federal Rep. of Germany (15.2 percent), Rep. of Korea (3.7 percent), Finland (3.4 percent), Brazil (3.1 percent), Republic of Iran (2.9 percent), Netherland (2.8 percent), USA. (2.7 percent) and South Africa (2.4 percent). The total exports to these countries accounted for 75.7 percent of the overall NR exports.

Year on year, imports also rose by 36.2 percent, 62,388 tonnes, an increase of 1.9 percent when compared to April 2012. Latex concentrate which is the main type of rubber imported was recorded at 42.3 percent of total imports during reference month.

Domestic consumption of NR in May 2012 was 36,508 tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 11.8 percent. Consumption so saw an increase of 1.4 percent when compared to April 2012.

In May 2012, the average monthly price of latex concentrate was 719.05 cent, dropped 4.4 percent compared to April 2012. The average price of latex in May 2012 was 23.8 percent lower when compared to May 2011.
