Tyre sales outside North America fell in June - Michelin

Paris -- Michelin reports that tyre sales around the world were poor in June, with replacement tyre sales down everywhere except Brazil.
The company has updated its website with a limited regional breakdown of the growth in the global tyre industry. The site still only gives percentage changes from a year ago and ignores Asia. Data is given for June 2012.
In truck tyre markets, Europe OE demand improved, with positive growth (4 percent) in June. In the year to date, the market declined by 2 percent. On the replacement side, June 2012 saw a decline of 18 percent compared to the same month a year ago. This is marginally less bad than the year-to-date decline of -26 percent
In the Americas, North American OE truck tyre markets continued to grow, but last year's hectic growth is slowing sharply -- the year to date has seen an increase of 18.0 percent, while growth in the most recent month was just 7.0 percent. Replacement sales were down by 2 percent in the month of June and down by 5 percent in the year to date. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 35 percent in the month of June and fell by 28 percent in the first six months while the decline in replacement sales was lower at -4 percent in the year to date, with a fall of 5 percent in June.
Michelin did not report sales outside these countries.
Car tyre markets were slightly less weak outside Europe. Europe showed a decline of 4 percent in the OE market for the month, taking the total fall in the first six months to 4 percent. On the replacement side, sales in June declined by 6 percent, contributing to the overall decline of 11 percent in the first six months.
In the Americas, North American OE markets rose by 17 percent in June, boosting the six-month growth to 21 percent. Replacement sales fell by 4 percent in June, easing the 3 percent decline seen in the the first six months. In Brazil, OE sales fell by 9 percent in the most recent month bringing the decline in the year to date to 7 percent. Replacement sales were up by 4 percent in June and by 3 percent in the first six months.
