Brazil's tyre label likely to look similar to EU scheme

Rio de Janeiro - Brazil has closed the window for comments on its proposed rules with respect to tyres and consumer labels.

The original discussion document contained information on the proposals which suggest the Brazilian label and limits will be very similar the EU label. It was published in mid-June and allowed 30 days for comments. Brazil's Institute Of Metrology, Quality And Technology, InMetro is now studying the responses from the consultation period and is expected to publish a revised document in the next few months.

In an appendix the Brazilian discussion document showed a proposed label which is almost indistinguishable from the EU version. Like its EU counterpart, the Brazilian version tracks rolling resistance, wet grip and noise.

The proposed limits on rolling resistance and wet grip are also identical to the EU limits in all categories of tyre (C1, C2 and C3) to the point that there is no category D for car tyres and no F or G category in truck tyres (C3).

Proposed noise limits are different from the EU. Brazil has proposed absolute limits on tyre noise measures as LV. The best classification is for a noise level LV is less than 69 dB. Next up is LV between 69 and 72 dB. The lowest level is from 72dB to 75 dB. Tyres above 75dB would not be permitted under these initial proposals.

The proposal gives an introductory period of around 4 years. 48 months after the final rule is published, all tyres sold, made or imported into Brazil would have to be in compliance.

The proposals also tighten up the rules on the safety criteria surrounding tyres and the sale of various types of tyres to Brazil's public.
