Freudenberg says bearing seal lasts 1m km
ERJ staff report (DS)
Weinheim, Germany -- Freudenberg says a new seal design on a tapered roller bearing for the railway market permits a life of up to 1 million km.
Schaeffler supplies Fag-Tarol wheelset bearings in double-row tapered roller designs. They are supplied greased, sealed, and ready to install, as well as with a set clearance and all necessary fixing elements and connectors.
The seals for the tapered roller bearings in the wheel bearing system of the bogie have to last at least one million kilometers and must continue to seal reliably even when the railway vehicles are operated in areas of high precipitation
Freudenberg said, “Schaeffler developed a specially designed cassette seal for this Tarol version. In the form of a main sealing lip that has no spring support whatsoever, the developers succeeded in minimising friction and thermal load. In addition, the sealing material was optimised to both meet the requirements and to suit the operating conditions in the wheelset bearings. Naturally, AAR requirements were also taken into account in this process. “
