Indian rubber supply eased in first quarter
ERJ staff report (DS)
Kottayam, India - Supply of both synthetic and natural rubber in India declined in the three months to June 2012, compare with a year ago. The data comes in the India Rubber Board's Rubber Statistical Bulletin dated August 2012. The publication covers data from the month of June and the first three months of India's fiscal year which runs from April to March.
In Natural rubber, production rose 4.7 percent to 62,000 tonne during June 2012 from 59,200 tonnes produced during the same month a year ago. But, the first quarter of the current fiscal (April-June 2012) ended with a 1.7 percent annualised fall in production because the higher supply during June could not fully offset low supply during the first two months.
Production of synthetic rubber followed a similar pattern, rising during June 2012 to 9,729 tonne from 9,398 tonne produced during May 2012. However, the first quarter witnessed a 2.1 percent annualised fall in production.
In terms of consumption, India's consumption of natural rubber India fell 2.1 percent to 83,930 tonne during June 2012 from 85,690 tonne in May 2012. The first quarter saw a 3.4 percent rise to 251,370 tonnes, helped by a 3.6 percent rise in the auto-tyre sector and 2.8 percent rise in the general rubber goods sector. Preliminary estimates suggest the country's NR consumption has risen to 86,000 tonne during July 2012.
Consumption of SR in June 2012 was largely unchanged from a month ago. The country consumed 38,725 tonne of SR during June 2012 as against 38,580 tonnes consumed during May 2012. The total consumption of SR during the first quarter of this year rose by an annualised 2.6 percent rate to 112,455 tonnes.
