Four international standards released for tire RFID

Qingdao, China – Four international standards for radio frequency identification (RFID) electronic tags for tires have been published and officially formalised, according to "master drafter" Mesnac.

The standards include ISO 20909:2019 Radio frequency identification (RFID) tire tags and ISO 20910:2019 Coding for radio frequency identification (RFID) tire tags, which were released in August 2019.

In addition, two new standards ISO 20911:2020 Radio frequency identification (RFID) tire tags - Tire attachment classification and ISO 20912:2020 Conformance test methods for RFID enabled tires were also published 20 April, the Chinese tire machinery maker said in a recent release in Chinese.

According to Mesnac, the Chinese tire industry expects to benefit significantly from the standards, which were initiated by China and mainly drafted by the machinery maker.

The standards are also expected to increase the influence of the Chinese tire sector in the global tire industry, Mesnac added.

The four standards for were formally established in October 2015, and were developed by the WG10 "RFID tire tags" working group established by the International Standards Organisation (ISO). 

The working group, according to Mesnac, is composed of more than 60 experts from various countries, including China, France, Italy, the US, the UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Finland and The Netherlands. 

The working group, Mesnac said, held 8 global working meetings and several working group network meetings over three years to discuss standard content and resolve disagreements amongst the involved parties. 

According to Mesnac, the standards ensure technological advancement while lowering the barrier to entry for tire RFID production, coding methods, application methods and research.
