New entity focused on US group’s material science offerings for automotive and wider mobility markets
Midland, Michigan – Dow has established a platform, called MobilityScience, to support its supply of technologies, products and services to the “transportation” sector.
The entity will encompass Dow’s polyolefin, polyurethane, acrylic, speciality chemical and silicone technologies for electric vehicles, hybrids and internal combustion powertrains.
The material-science platform is intended to address “mega-trends” in the automotive/mobility sectors “enabling a seamless experience” for customers and partners.
Customer should benefit from improved service, accelerated innovation, reduced complexity and more effective connection to Dow, added its 1 July press statement.
The initiative responds to the emergence of a new frontier for material science and innovation due to digitalisation and shift to a low-carbon economy, it explained.
Key targets include meeting requirements for lighter weight, longer range, greater comfort, enhanced safety, and lower carbon footprint, the company stated.
Explaining the background, Mike McCaffrey, Dow commercial communications manager said the group’s transportation-related offerings are provided from across its reporting segments.
And, prior to the Dow spin-off from DowDuPont, the Dow Automotive business managed the segment strategy for the company.
“That business unit was dissolved upon separation, while the majority of transportation-related technologies remained,” said McCaffrey.
MobilityScience, he continued, is, “a market platform created to own the segment strategy going forward across our businesses.
“Cross-business MobilityScience commercial teams operating in all regions [will] act locally while ensuring global coordination.”
According to McCaffrey, all team members “occupy roles currently within the reporting segments, now coordinating as one.”
Asked about business objectives, McCaffrey said Dow had yet to set specific revenue targets for the overall MobilityScience platform.
