Michelin upgrades tracking tire system for broader application

Clermont-Ferrand, France – Groupe Michelin has upgraded its tracking tire system to allow it to be used more widely by driving enthusiasts, the French tire maker announced 17 July.

Launched in March 2018, Michelin Track Connect system includes sensors, a connection box and an app for smartphones providing information and advice.

The technology, according to Michelin, acts “like a virtual tire engineer”, constantly analysing the “evolution of tire pressure” and providing the driver with advice on tire management.

After 2 years of “immersive testing”, Michelin said in its latest statement, the technology which was originally developed for track days drivers and specific sports cars, has now be extended for mainstream use.

The app, which is the brain of the system, is now available in three modes.

Leisure mode is accessible to all and can be used regardless of its tires. Expert mode is intended for owners of sportscars participating in track- days and Motorsport mode is intended for rally drivers.

The two Expert and Motorsport modes require the use of a Michelin Track Connect kit and need to be combined with the use of Michelin connected tires.

The Leisure mode is usable on any tire and allows to record lap times and speeds, while the “evolution of tire inflation pressures” between the start and finish can be measured manually. 

The mode also enables drivers to analyse their runs and share results on social medias.

Track Connect’s Expert mode allows drivers to monitor the evolution of tire pressures and temperatures in real time and helps them improve lap times, Michelin said. 

The Motorsport mode optimises vehicles for race performance by preparing the tires with the correct pressure before the start. The app provides personalised advice according to the car model, use, type of tires fitted and driving conditions.
