Pirelli CO2 emission cuts validated by environmental initiative

Milan, Italy – Pirelli & C. SpA’s targets for CO2 emission cuts have been consistent with actions needed to maintain climate warming below 2°C, according to the science based targets initiative (SBTi).

Established by the UN Global Compact, CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), SBTi encourages companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions-reduction targets.

The validation, said Pirelli in a 22 June statement, is a “significant recognition” of the Italian tire maker’s commitment to achieving “group carbon neutrality by 2030.”

As part of the ambitious project, the tire maker aims to use 100% renewable electric energy by 2025 across its sites. 

In detail, the SBTi has validated Pirelli’s goal of reducing by 25% its absolute direct and indirect carbon emissions by 2025 compared with 2015 and cutting by 9% the absolute CO2 emissions linked to the acquisition of raw materials by 2025 compared with 2018. 

"Our commitment to sustainable development and the fight against climate change is constant and sees us at work every day,” said Marco Tronchetti Provera, the executive vice chairman and CEO of the company.

Pirelli, he noted, through its R&D efforts, aims identify innovative materials and adopt sustainable processes and products, that can contribute to the safeguarding the planet.
