New EU tire labelling rules 'to apply in UK post-Brexit'

Aylesbury, UK – Despite exiting the bloc earlier this year, the UK has adopted the new EU tire labelling regulations coming into force at the end of this month, according to the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA).
 
The UK will "take up, follow and use" the new regulations and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has been appointed as the enforcement agency, NTDA chief executive Stefan Hay informed ERJ.
 
“The UK/EU Withdrawal Agreement is in force and gives effect to a transition period until 31 December 2020 during which time EU law continues to apply in relation to the UK,” Hay explained in a 17 June written statement.

This, he said, includes legislations introduced during the transition period while the UK continues to be part of the EU single market and customs union. 
 
While regulations will be reviewed after the UK’s full departure, Hay does not expect EU and UK legislation to differ much “in the foreseeable future.”
 
The UK officially exited the European bloc at the end of January 2020 and has until the end of this year to negotiate a trade deal with the EU.
 
Revised EU tire label rules, under Tyre Label Regulation (EU) 2020/740, will enter into force on 25 June and be applicable as of 1 May 2021.
 
The revised EU regulation is intended to make tire labels “more visible, more future proof and more accurate.”
 
The changes, which have been broadly welcomed by the industry, are intended to increase consumer awareness of the tire label.
 
Another target is to improve market surveillance and enforcement of the regulation through multiple measures, including “sanctions and penalties.”
