Target uses include light-weight seals for the automotive and construction industries
Westbury, UK – SPC Europe Ltd has developed new formulations for the manufacture of closed-cell expanded EPDM materials with a ‘premium density’ as low as 0.3.
The sponge products exhibit excellent elastic recovery and are especially lightweight, with good waterproof properties, according to an SPC release.
“We have developed new technology in both formulation and compounding for these specific recipes,” said Bhawan Patel, SPC technical manager.
“Some of the technology was only introduced last year and has enabled us to develop a product with a smoother skin and achieve lower density than seen before,” he added.
Target applications include door seals and other parts requiring weight-saving in the automotive industry as well as weatherproofing products for the construction industry.
Citing customer feedback, Bhawan said the material has been found to form a particularly smooth surface-skin and to provide a strong air and watertight barrier, which helps to prevent build-up of bacteria or mould.
