Company has also suspended production at its truck and bus tire factory in Mississippi
Salem, Virginia – Yokohama Tire Corp. (YTC) is suspending production at its passenger and light truck tire plant in Salem for at least two weeks, starting 5 April, the company announced 3 April.
The tire maker had already halted production at its truck tire plant in West Point, Mississippi, as of 28 March, in response to the coronavirus.
The move affects about 900 workers at the Salem plant; the West Point closure affected 500 employees.
During the shutdown, Yokohama said it plans to carry out sterilisation and decontamination measures at the plant, to help stem the spread of Covid-19.
The 52-year-old Salem plant makes passenger and light truck tires, with a reported capacity of over 6 million units a year.
Yokohama's move comes three days after Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued a statewide Stay at Home order that directs all state residents to stay at home except in "extremely limited circumstances."
