Ceat inaugurates its biggest tire plant in India

Chennai, India – Ceat Tyres Ltd. has inaugurated what it describes as its largest passenger car radial tires manufacturing plant in the Kanchipuram district, in India’s southern province of Tamil Nadu.

Commissioned within 18 months, the plant has a total manufacturing capacity of 28,500 passenger car tires and 2,500 motorcycle per day, the Indian tire maker announced 12 Feb.

The company invested INR14 billion (€180 million) in the greenfield factory, which is claimed to be “one of the most advanced tire plants in South Asia.”

The tire maker intends to invest a total of INR40 billion in the facility over a 10-year period and expects to create more than 1,000 job opportunities “in the next few years.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ceat managing director Anant Goenka said Tamil Nadu will offer the company access to many automotive manufacturers, proximity to port and a “favourable” labour environment.

Also attending the event, Shri Edappadi Palaniswami, chief minister of Tamil Nadu said the factory was "a jewel in the crown of Tamil Nadu." 

Claimed to be one of the first tire factories to employ women on the shop floor, the facility is planning to further increase women employment in the region.

The unit is Ceat’s sixth manufacturing facility in India, along with plants in Mumbai, Nasik, Nagpur, Ambernath and Halol.
