ETRMA calls for policy makers' support in sustainability bid

Brussels – The European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has called on policy makers and regulators to support Europe’s tire industry in delivering its sustainability goals.

EU institutions and member states could support “measures driving consumers towards existing tire products favouring the circular economy objectives,” stated ETRMA’s new ‘circular economy action plan’.

Several steps have been taken by the industry to facilitate repair and remanufacturing and to increase tire lifetime, according to the industry’s group’s document published 20 Jan. 

Premium truck tires, for example, are designed to be retreaded up to three times, leading to 70% material savings and a longer lifespan, it pointed out.

Addressing policy makers, ETRMA called for a “favourable regulatory environment and dedicated support” to ensure that funding supports and drives technology forward.

The trade body also urged EU regulators to support and focus on scientific breakthroughs in the recycling of vulcanised rubber to ‘close the loop’.

According to ETRMA, the European tire industry has contributed to the principles of the circular economy by both improving the performance of tires and advances in end-of-life tire management.

In Europe today, virtually all ELTs are being collected for recycling with a 62% material recovery rate and the residual 38% as energy recovery, the association noted.

The industry, it added, has continuously optimised product features: minimising weight, rolling resistance and noise, while improving safety and driving comfort.
