Klean progresses tire pyrolysis projects

Vancouver, British Colombia – Canadian tire pyrolysis company Klean Industries Inc. is progressing with the construction of production facilities in the UK and US, the company has announced.

Having acquired Berlin-based Carbon Resources Recovery GmbH (CRR) in November, Klean said it has now selected an engineering partner to deliver the projects.

The unnamed EPC partner will build Klean’s tire pyrolysis and recovered carbon facilities in the US at the former ReKlaim site in Boardman, Oregon, and another one in the UK Midlands.

The flagship facilities will each employ “fully integrated” tire recycling and resource recovery processes with nameplate production capacities of 120 tonnes per day .

The combined projects will have a capital cost of $150 million (€134 million) and will convert scrap tires into “high-quality ASTM-rated products such as oil, a near nano grade recovered carbon black (rCB) and steel.”

The project in the UK is being revived following a pause in the aftermath of Brexit uncertainties, according to Klean.

In June 2016, Klean and its partners decided to pull all further investments out of the UK due to concerns over the economic outlook and risks in leaving the EU.

At the time, Klean said it was relying on the European marketplace for nearly 50% of the UK plant’s output.

In 2019, however, Klean said it developed “the single largest network for production and distribution of recovered carbon black globally.”

With its own network for recovered carbon black sales, Klean added that any EU tariffs would not impact its business as it will mainly supply the local UK market.
