Datwyler adds combi power at Italian site

Milan, Italy - Dätwyler has launched a combined heat and power plant at its production site in Pregnana near Milan as part of a strategy for the “responsible use of natural resources”.

The company invested CHF1.7 million (€1.5 million) in the natural gas-run power plant, which combines the generation of electricity, heat and cooling.

Built over a 12-month period, the power plant is designed to cover most of the energy requirements of the site and will reduce CO2 emissions at the location by 900 tonnes per year, said Datwyler in a 19 Nov statement.

The new system will also cut 70% of the Pregnana site’s reliance on the public electricity grid, resulting in long-term cost-saving.

"The facility represents a contribution toward the sustainable, climate-friendly production of our products,” said Dirk Lambrecht, group CEO.

Put into operation in October, the plant works on the principle of cogeneration and is claimed to be “the most efficient form of energy production available at the moment.”

Installed in an area of 100 square metres, the system supplies more than 7000 MWh of electricity and around 3000 MWh of heating and cooling capacity per year.

The Dätwyler plant in Pregnana employs around 290 people and produces sealing solutions for the pharmaceutical industry.
