Mumbai, India – Birla Carbon has released its annual sustainability report, highlighting progress in operational excellence, innovation and safety measures.
The company said it had been awarded a gold rating by EcoVadis rating agency for the third year in a row, having screened 100% of its suppliers for compliance.
The Indian carbon black producer also reported that 70% of its sites completed the year without a “recordable injury”, after the introduction of its ‘serious injury and fatality initiative’ at six key operation areas.
The Safe Six covers lockout-tagout (LOTO), working at heights, mobile equipment, electrical, hot work and confined spaces, and promotes near-miss reporting within the company.
Over the year, Birla reinvested 3.5% of its profit in research and development, and established a global information sharing programme for recording product quality issues and devising solutions.
In terms of energy consumption, Birla said 75% of its facilities are currently “energy positive” with 11 plants making energy related investments in the financial year 2019.
Commenting on the report, Birla Carbon CEO Santrupt B Misra said he hoped that his company would remain a ‘preferred partner’ to its customers as a result of its sustainability efforts.
