Makola, Sri Lanka – Trelleborg Lanka, part of Trelleborg Wheel Systems (TWS), has placed three initial orders for recovered carbon black from Scandinavian Enviro Systems.
The tire maker placed the orders following “successful production tests,” and will be using the EnviroCB materials for the production of solid tires, Enviro said in a 24 June statement.
The supply contract consists of deliveries up until October 2019, with the potential for further extensions for the remainder of 2019 and 2020.
Enviro estimates the annual value of the contract at €180,000.
Based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Enviro has a patented tire pyrolysis technology to recover carbon black (rBC), oil, steel and gas from end of life tires .
“As we continue to work towards expanding the global production capacity by establishing plants, a company like Trelleborg is an important partner,” said Thomas Sörensson, Enviro CEO.
The transition to recovered carbon black is part of Trelleborg Wheel Systems’ strategy to reduce its environmental impact throughout the entire life cycle of the tire and reducing CO2 emissions, according to Paolo Pompei, president at TWS.
“This is just another of a large number of initiatives launched by Trelleborg to meet the challenges of climate change,” Pompei added.
Trelleborg has stepped up its sustainability efforts in Sri Lanka with the introduction, in June, of “an advanced biomass boiler” at its production facility in Makola, near Colombo.
The biomass-fired boiler, according to Trelleborg, will reduce CO2 emission by over 90%, compared to the furnace oil boiler currently in use.
The plant manufactures solid tires for the materials-handling and port industries, as well as pneumatic tires for light agricultural applications.
