Windspace, Enviro advance tire pyrolysis project

Nyborg, Denmark – Renewable energy group Windspace and Scandinavian Enviro systems have advanced their joint project to set up a tire pyrolysis plant in Denmark.

The two firms have set up Elysium Nordicm as a joint venture company and have applied for a building permit and environmental approvals at Nyborg municipality, according to a 12 June statement.

The goal is to start the construction phase before the end of the year, said Jens Elton Andersen, CEO of Windspace and Elysium Nordic.

The two companies announced their plans to build “one of the world’s largest pyrolysis plants” in Denmark to recover carbon black, gas, steel and oil from end-of-life tires (ELTs) in February.

The plant will be able to recover more than 9,000 tonnes of carbon black from 30,000 tonnes of ELT on start-up in 2021, WindSpace announced 5 Feb.

Much of the 3 million ELTs collected every year across the EU gets “treated as waste instead of the valuable resource they are,” added the Kongens Lyngby-based group.

The companies have estimated the cost of the plant at €40 million.
