Oslo – Elkem Silicones has developed a new tin-free catalyst system for room-temperature-vulcanising (RTV 2) silicones.
Nykat is used for standard condensation curing silicones RTV-2 for moulding applications, Elkem said in a 22 May statement, without offering further details.
“Some of the organic tin compounds that are used as catalysts for the condensation reaction for the RTV-2 are now restricted in use due to their toxicity,” the Norwegian silicones supplier said.
The tin-free catalyst system, Elkem added, will create a safer working environment for customers.
RTV silicone is a type of silicone rubber made from a two-component system and can be cured either with a platinum catalyst (addition curing) or a tin compound (condensation curing).
