Birla Carbon units receive safety recognition

Mumbai, India – The International Carbon Black Association (ICBA) has recognised 13 Birla Carbon facilities for “achieving a level of safety performance above industry average,” the company announced 6 June.

Eleven carbon black plants across North America, Europe and Asia and Birla Carbon’s R&D centre in Marietta, Georgia, received the ICBA gold award.

Another plant received the bronze award, according to the company’s statement.

A total of 44 global carbon black manufacturing facilities received the recognition as part of ICBA’s safety recognition programme.

“Safety is a key component of everything we do,” said Joe Gaynor, chief legal, risk and sustainability officer, Birla Carbon.

This policy, he added, encompasses “safety of people, safe handling of carbon black and safe management of the manufacturing facilities.”

The ICBA gold award recognises sites that achieved three years of ‘zero lost work days’ and reported no fire or property damages greater than $100,000.

The award also considers external safety or environmental management system certification recognition, such as ISO 45001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001.
