ERJ Archives: Early earplugs
This picture was published 100 years ago, registering one of the early day earplugs, named Tommy.
A short entry in our archives on 22 May 1915 shows “‘Tommy’ the eardrum protector” brought out by a Mr Geo. F. Berry.
“It is very simple and its construction and method of insertion clear in the illustration. It is however based on sound scientific principles, being the avoidance of all unnecessary interference with the action of the membrane of the tympanum.”
As for its use, the post says, “Besides being of incalculable benefit as relieving the strain felt by all soldiers when in the zone of artillery fire, this eardrum [protector] should find acceptance among those employed in armament works, dockyards, boiler works, foundries, etc.”
