London - The US delegation failed to show up again at talks aimed at freeing up trade in the global tire industry by harmonising product standards across the world (see ERJ report).
The abstention from the Global Technical Regulations meeting in Brussels are likely due to the concerns over the cost impact for the US tire industry.
Another possible factor is protectionist tendencies in Washington - as evidenced by the administration's current hard-line stance on Chinese tire imports.
Whatever the reason, it looks like the end of the road for the global free-trade proposals.
