London - During World War I, the football bladder business "received a stimulus through great demand for footballs for the fighting area," according to an issue from the ERJ archives.
"In most cases these are presents and very substantial sums have been raised by newspapers and others for the purchase of these goods," said a 20 Nov 1915 report..
One medical corps contingent was reported to have set up a football league and to have received "quite a respectable volume of knicks (shorts) and jerseys in addition to footballs."
